The Birkin bag is the signature Hermès handbag. The Bearn is a women’s wallet that has been a hit for over 20 years. The wallet gets its name from a region in southwestern France. Hermès is known for their bags, but even among their selection, one bag, in particular, looms tall—The Birkin. As the story goes, it was a chance encounter that led to the creation of the Birkin. The year is 1984, and the 5th generation and acting president of Hermès, Jean-Louis Dumas, is sitting next to singer Jane Birkin on a flight to London. Birkin had with her a straw bag filled to the brim. The sight of the singer and the inadequacy of her straw bag would lead Dumas to offer to design a bag that could meet the needs of Ms Birkin. Thus, Dumas set off to design a new bag using the brand’s Haut à courroies as a starting point. When finished, Dumas would take Jane Birkin’s surname as the name for the bag.
