In normal conditions, chrysoberyl is often yellow or green and does not change colour depending on the light source. The unique shift of colour appearance of alexandrite is called the “alexandrite effect,” and only the gemstones with this special quality are called “alexandrite.” Compared to other famous stones, alexandrite’s history as a jewellery gemstone is relatively short; however, many call it “the king of gems” because of its mysterious charm, and it is sometimes referred to as equal to the historical “four great gems,” diamond, ruby, sapphire and emerald, a title, therefore, expanded to “five great gems” in order to include the alexandrite.
